Your Guide to Vaccinations for Puppies and Kittens

Keeping Your Newest Family Members Healthy from the Start

Bringing home a new puppy or kitten is one of life’s greatest joys. With their tiny paws, curious eyes, and endless energy, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement. But just like human babies, these little ones need help building a strong immune system—and that starts with vaccinations.

At Cliffdale Animal Hospital, we’re here to make sure your newest family member has the best start possible. Here’s a simple guide to understanding which vaccinations your puppy or kitten needs, and when.

Why Are Vaccines So Important?

Puppies and kittens are born with some natural protection from their mothers, but that immunity fades fast. Vaccinations help “train” their immune systems to fight off dangerous diseases, some of which can be life-threatening.

Vaccines are one of the safest and most effective ways to prevent illness and keep your pet (and other animals) healthy.

Puppy Vaccination Schedule

Core Vaccines (recommended for all dogs):

    • DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus)
      First dose: 6–8 weeks
Boosters every 3–4 weeks until 16–20 weeks of age
    • Rabies
First dose: Typically around 16 weeks
Booster at 1 year, then every 1–3 years, depending on local laws

Optional (but often recommended based on lifestyle):

Kitten Vaccination Schedule

Core Vaccines (recommended for all cats):

    • FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia)
      First dose: 6–8 weeks
Boosters every 3–4 weeks until 16–20 weeks of age
    • Rabies
      First dose: Around 12–16 weeks
Booster at 1 year, then every 1–3 years

Optional (depending on lifestyle):

    • FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus)
Recommended especially for kittens going outdoors or living with other cats

What to Expect After a Vaccination

Most pets handle vaccines very well, with only mild side effects like slight sleepiness or tenderness at the injection site. In rare cases, some may experience more noticeable reactions. Always contact us if your pet seems unwell after a visit—we’re here to help!

Personalized Care for Your Pet

No two pets are alike. Your puppy or kitten’s vaccine schedule may vary depending on their age, breed, health, and exposure risk. At Cliffdale Animal Hospital, we create customized vaccination plans based on your pet’s individual needs and lifestyle.
