Summer Treats You Can Make for Your Pet

Veterinary clinicLike humans, animals also struggle to deal with the scorching heat of summers. But while we indulge in scoopfuls of refreshing ice-creams to send away the heat, our pets continue to bear the brunt of it. So what can you do to make sure your pet also gets to enjoy some chilled summer treat? And no, you cannot feed your sidekick your ice cream because it’s full of sugar, which can be harmful to animals.

Instead of giving your little friend store-bought icy treats, you can make some healthy summer delights for them at home. By doing so, you will help your animal-friend fight the heat without compromising on their health. Plus, you will have a fun time making treats. It’s a win-win-win!

The recipes we have for you are super easy to make and do not require lots of ingredients. You can make all these recipes with the ingredients you have at home. Now without further ado, let’s jump into the recipes.

Peanut Butter and Jam Frozen Bones

If your pet likes peanut butter, then PB&J frozen bones are the ideal summer snacks for it. They don’t require a lot of prep time and taste delicious (even you can pop one or two if you want to).

Ingredients

  • 1 cup strawberries
  • ¼ cup of water
  • 2-3 tablespoons of natural peanut butter (one without Xylitol as it is toxic for animals)

Method

  • Wash your strawberries thoroughly and chop them up. Blend them with water and prepare a puree.
  • Pour the puree into an ice-cube tray, then plop a dollop of peanut butter into each slot.
  • Pop the tray in the freezer for a few hours
  • Once the treats are frozen completely, take them out, and give your pet a party.

Frozen Apple Treats

Apples are excellent at providing healthy micronutrients to humans and animals alike. These frozen apple treats are the perfect way of providing your pet with nourishment while treating its taste buds.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium-sized apple
  • ½ cup low-fat Greek yogurt (you can swap it with full-fat yogurt if you wish to)
  • Water (if necessary)

Method

  • Chop the apple into small pieces, and make sure you remove all the seeds and core.
  • Blend the yogurt and apple to form a thick batter. Add water if necessary.
  • Pour the mixture into an ice cube tray and freeze it for a few hours.
  • Take the treats out when they are completely frozen and let your pet have some fun in the sun.

Try these recipes as is or tweak them according to your little bud’s liking. But make sure you run the ingredients by your vet so that you don’t accidentally harm your pet. If you want to know more about feeding your pet, contact us today at Cliffdale Animal Hospital in Fayetteville, NC.
