Seasonal Pet Care: How to Keep Your Pets Safe and Healthy This Summer

Summer is a season full of fun, sunshine, and outdoor adventures—but for our furry companions, it also brings unique risks. As temperatures rise, so do the chances of heat-related illnesses, dehydration, and other seasonal hazards. At Cliffdale Animal Hospital, we want to ensure your pets enjoy a safe and happy summer by staying healthy and protected.

Here’s your go-to guide for keeping your pets cool, comfortable, and out of harm’s way during the hottest months of the year.

1. Watch Out for Heatstroke

Pets can easily overheat, especially dogs and cats with thick fur, short noses (like Bulldogs or Persians), or those who are older or overweight. Unlike humans, pets don’t sweat, they pant —we rely on fans and air conditioning, but they rely on us!

Signs of Heatstroke Include:

      • Excessive panting or drooling
      • Weakness or lethargy
      • Vomiting or diarrhea
      • Bright red gums
      • Collapse or confusion

If you notice these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately.

2. Hydration is Key

Always provide fresh, cool water—whether you're at home or on an outdoor adventure. Consider adding extra water bowls around the house or using pet water fountains to encourage your pet to drink more.

Tip: Drop a few ice cubes into their water bowl for a refreshing treat!

3. Protect Those Paws

Pavement, sand, and asphalt can become scorching hot in the summer sun, burning your pet’s sensitive paw pads.

Quick Test: Place your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.

Solutions:

      • Walk early in the morning or later in the evening.
      • Stick to grassy areas.
      • Use protective booties if needed.

4. Parasite Prevention is a Must

Summer is prime time for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, which can carry diseases such as heartworm, Lyme disease, and others.

Ensure your pet is up-to-date on:

If you're unsure about your pet’s parasite protection, contact us for guidance or to schedule a preventive care appointment.

5. Beware of Summer Treats and Toxic Foods

Backyard barbecues and picnics are fun for the family, but can pose risks for pets. Common summer foods like grapes, onions, chocolate, and anything containing xylitol are toxic to pets.

Also, avoid giving pets fatty scraps like ribs or burgers, which can lead to pancreatitis.

6. Never Leave Your Pet in a Parked Car

Even with windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can soar to dangerous levels within minutes. Leaving your pet unattended in a vehicle can quickly turn fatal, and in many states, it’s illegal.

Make This Summer Safe and Enjoyable!

By following these simple tips, you can help your pets stay cool, healthy, and happy throughout the summer. If you have any concerns about your pet’s health or want to ensure they’re protected from seasonal threats, schedule a wellness check with Cliffdale Animal Hospital today.
