When the temperatures drop, many pet parents bundle up — but our furry friends need a little extra protection, too. Winter weather brings its own set of hidden dangers, from icy sidewalks to road salt and frostbite risks. Here’s what every pet owner should know to keep their companions safe and comfortable this season.
Icy sidewalks and driveways can be just as dangerous for pets as they are for humans. Dogs can slip and strain muscles, sprain joints, or even suffer fractures. Cats venturing outside can lose their footing or get trapped under icy decks or porches.
Tip: Keep walkways cleared and sprinkle pet-safe ice melt instead of chemical de-icers.
Many common de-icing salts contain chemicals that irritate paw pads and can be toxic if licked off. Even small amounts can cause drooling, vomiting, or stomach upset.
Tip: After walks, always wipe your pet’s paws with a damp towel or use pet-friendly paw wipes. You can also apply a protective balm or invest in booties for dogs that tolerate them.
Pets can suffer frostbite on ears, paws, and tails when exposed to cold for too long — especially small, short-haired, or elderly animals.
Tip: Limit outdoor time during extreme cold and keep walks short. If your pet shivers, whines, or slows down, bring them inside immediately. Provide warm bedding away from drafts and ensure outdoor pets have insulated shelters with dry bedding.
Antifreeze spills can be deadly — it has a sweet taste that attracts animals, but just a few drops can be fatal.
Tip: Keep antifreeze stored securely and clean up spills right away. If you suspect your pet may have ingested any, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
Winter air is dry, and heaters can irritate pets’ skin and respiratory systems.
Tip: Use a humidifier if your home feels dry and keep your pet well-hydrated. Senior pets or those with arthritis may need softer bedding or a heated pet pad (on a low, safe setting) to stay comfortable.
Winter can be a wonderful time for snuggles and play, but it’s also a season for extra care. By staying alert to these cold-weather hazards, you can help your pets stay safe, happy, and healthy until spring arrives.
